A Perfect Summer Day on Hood Canal — Wedding at Alderbrook Resort & Spa

If you've ever stood on the lawn at Alderbrook Resort and looked out at Hood Canal with the Olympic Mountains rising behind it, you understand immediately why people choose to get married there. It's one of those views that does the work for you — and Nichole and Ash's wedding day had all of it, bathed in the kind of clear summer light that makes every photograph feel like it was planned.

The two of them had already given me a preview of what they were like together during their engagement session at Mount Rainier — easy, laughing, completely at home in the Pacific Northwest wilderness — and their wedding day had that same quality. Unhurried. Genuinely happy. Present.

The ceremony was held on the waterfront lawn, a wooden arch dressed with white florals framing the canal and mountains beyond. The whole setup was clean and classic — white chairs, green garlands, a palette that let the landscape do exactly what it was going to do anyway. When Nichole walked down the aisle, the whole scene came together in the way you hope it will but can never quite plan for.

One of my favorite details of the day was tucked into cocktail hour: custom coloring pages featuring their cat, surrounded by illustrated florals, with crayons and colored pencils set out for guests. It was the kind of personal touch that immediately tells you something true about a couple — that they think about the people around them, that they have a sense of humor, and that their cat is clearly beloved. Those pages were filled in with great enthusiasm.

The reception unfolded under a tent draped in greenery, with floating candles at the center of every table, the last of the evening light coming through the sides as toasts were made and laughter carried across the water. Nichole and Ash spent most of it exactly where you'd want them — laughing, leaning in, looking at each other the way people do when the day has been everything they hoped.

Nichole and Ash, it was such a beautiful day. Alderbrook, you never disappoint.
