Brooke and David: A Surprise Anniversary Session in Maui
Here is something I love. When I got the email from David, it was because he wanted to surprise Brooke with a couples session on their anniversary trip to Maui. He had already planned the whole thing. All Brooke knew was that they were going for a walk on the beach that evening. The rest was a secret.
We met up at Baldwin Beach on Maui's north shore, and the setting did not disappoint. Soft golden hour light stretching out over the water, that big open Pacific sky, clusters of black lava rocks right where the sand meets the waves, and windblown ironwood trees along the back edge of the beach. It is the kind of place that does half of the work for you as a photographer.
Brooke's reaction when David told her what was happening was its own little moment, and you can feel it in the frames that followed. They held hands and walked the shoreline. They kissed in the waves and got absolutely soaked doing it, not one bit of concern for the dress or the shorts. He lifted her out of the water, and she laughed with her whole body. At one point, a wave crashed behind them on the rocks and sent a spray of water right across the frame, and it is one of my favorite images from the whole session. A little bit of chaos, a lot of joy.
There is something about sessions like this. The kind where one person has quietly been planning a surprise for their favorite person. You can feel the care in the air. David didn't just book a photographer; he booked a memory, and you could tell how much it meant to Brooke that he paid attention to what she would love.
This is why I love doing destination and anniversary sessions. Big celebrations like weddings are wonderful, but the in-between milestones matter too. Anniversaries, vacations, the trip you took just because you wanted to. These are the years of a marriage actually being lived, and they deserve photos, too.
If you are planning a trip somewhere beautiful and want to do something like this for your partner, I'd love to chat. Whether it's another island, a quiet beach closer to home, or anywhere in between, there is real magic in capturing a moment that is just about the two of you.
