Oregon to Scotland & Back Again | Kelli & Niall's Wedding at Gray Gables Estate, Portland
Let me tell you how Kelli and Niall met.
Niall is Scottish. He and some friends decided to road trip up and down the West Coast — and one of the truly "American" experiences on their list was attending a college football game. They chose the University of Oregon. They arrived at the tailgate fully committed: green Ducks gear, green tutus, face paint. The whole thing.
By complete chance, they parked next to Kelli's family, who had been tailgating at Autzen for years. Kelli's dad struck up a conversation with this enthusiastic Scotsman in a tutu, and then — as dads do — said: I need to introduce you to my daughter.
That began a long-distance relationship spanning Portland to Scotland. Somehow they made it work. Somehow they made it to a wedding day.
That wedding day was supposed to happen earlier. COVID had other plans, and the date was pushed. When they finally got to Gray Gables Estate — Portland's beautiful ivy-draped estate with its Greek temple ceremony pavilion, crystal chandelier ballroom, and lush garden paths — Niall's family still couldn't make it. Scotland was too far, and the world was too complicated. It was the one thing missing from an otherwise perfect day.
Then came the reception.
During the toasts, a video started playing on the screen in the ballroom — a compilation of messages from Niall's family and friends back in Scotland, all of them sending their love across the ocean. Niall lost it. Completely. The kind of emotional that makes the whole room go quiet and then erupt at the same time. Kelli had organized the whole thing in secret. That's a love language.
Earlier in the day, she'd handed him another gift: an album from a boudoir session I'd photographed earlier in the year. He sat in the garden arbor in his full Scottish kilt and tweed jacket, sporran on, and opened it quietly. If you're a bride considering a bridal boudoir add-on, this is exactly why I offer it. The gift is personal in a way that nothing else quite is — and I would love to create that for you too.
Niall wore the kilt all day, all night. The Celtic-engraved sporran, the knee socks, the Ghillie Brogues. It was intentional and meaningful and looked absolutely right at a venue like Gray Gables, which has the bones of an old estate and the soul of a garden party. The ceremony pavilion — white columns, cream draping, a chandelier — is one of the most elegant backdrops I've had the pleasure of photographing at. We've done another wedding here too, which you can see here.
Gray Gables Estate is located in Portland, Oregon — a beautiful private estate with a garden ceremony pavilion, a crystal chandelier ballroom, and some of the most elegant wedding spaces in the city.
