She Said Yes at Haystack Rock: A Surprise Proposal in Pacific City, Oregon
There is a particular kind of stillness that comes with hiding on a beach, waiting for someone to get down on one knee. The waves are loud. The wind is doing something. A chocolate lab is trotting around in the wet sand, completely unaware of the weight of the moment. And you are very far away, very quiet, with a long lens pointed at two tiny figures in front of one of the most iconic rock formations on the Oregon coast.
That is exactly where I was when this proposal happened.
He had it all planned. Pacific City, Haystack Rock, a stormy grey sky that made the whole scene feel like something out of a novel. She thought they were just out for a walk on the beach with their pup. She had no idea I was there. And then he stopped, and he turned to her, and he asked. From where I was standing, I could see the exact moment it registered on her face. The way her whole body shifted. The way she reached for him.
After the yes, I made my way down to them and we spent the rest of the afternoon just walking the shore, letting the moment settle, letting them be happy. Their dog was an enthusiastic co-star throughout, ears flapping, nose to the sand, completely unbothered by the fact that his family had just gotten a little bigger in the best possible way. The ring shot with Haystack Rock soft in the background might be one of my favorite frames I've made on the Oregon coast.
Congratulations to these two. The Oregon coast was the perfect place to start forever.
