Allie & Ryan | A Wedding at Gorge Retreat in the Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

There are venues, and then there are places. Gorge Retreat is the second kind.

Eight private acres overlooking the Columbia River, surrounded by National Forest, ten minutes from downtown Hood River. A spring-fed pond at the center of the property, a dock at its edge, and the Gorge rising in every direction — forested ridgelines, river silver in the distance, mountains above the treeline. Guests gathered around the pond on all sides for the ceremony, the scene stretching out into that view, and it looked like something out of a dream.

Allie got married on that dock. She wore a lace gown with thin straps and carried a bouquet of pink and white roses, eucalyptus, blue thistle, and the softest pink astilbe — effortless and completely her. When she and Ryan kissed for the first time as a married couple, their reflection was in the water below them, the Gorge filling the frame behind them.

The bridesmaids were in dusty rose, bouquets raised, hair catching the Gorge wind, genuinely thrilled. One of them — Amelia — is a former bride of mine, and I was so glad to see her here. But the moment in this gallery that stopped me when I edited it was quieter than any of that: two forearms resting side by side, matching lotus tattoos on each wrist. Allie and one of her bridesmaids are survivors of the 2017 Las Vegas shooting. They got those tattoos together. They carry that bond with them everywhere — including into the most joyful days of their lives. That image is one of the most meaningful I've ever made at a wedding.

After the ceremony, Allie and Ryan did something I have never seen before and absolutely loved: they ran the entire perimeter of the pond and high-fived every single guest. Every one. The crowd went wild. It was loud and joyful and completely them, and I was laughing behind my lens the entire time, trying to keep up.

The evening opened into the forest under string lights — toasts, champagne raised, Ryan with a microphone working the room, Allie's arm up in a full celebration pose beside him. A couple who came in ready to have the best night of their lives and delivered on that completely.

Allie and Ryan — this wedding was one for the books. Thank you for having me in the Gorge with you.
