Rustic Romance at the Edge of Yellowstone | Union Pacific Dining Lodge | West Yellowstone, Montana
Mary and Fred are not the kind of people who sit still for long — and honestly, that's exactly why they're so good together.
The two of them have spent years working at camps across the country, the kind of people who are most at home when they're outside, moving, doing something. Their most recent chapter had brought them to West Yellowstone, which made the location of their wedding feel less like a choice and more like an inevitability. Of course, they got married here. Where else?
Union Pacific Dining Lodge is a rustic dream of a venue — all warm wood and wide windows and the kind of atmosphere that makes you feel like you've stepped into a different era entirely. It's the sort of place that doesn't need much dressing up because the bones are already so good. The mountains are right there. The light comes in golden and unhurried. The beautiful Dainty Daydream handled the planning, and it showed — everything flowed seamlessly from start to finish, which meant I got to just focus on the moments. That's the mark of a great planner.
Somewhere in the middle of the reception, an inflatable flamingo made a very dignified appearance on the dance floor. I had questions. The story I got was better than anything I could have made up. Apparently, back in college, Mary had an inflatable flamingo she kept around as a joke — her stand-in boyfriend, affectionately nicknamed Fred. A placeholder, a bit, a running gag. Something she probably didn't think about much after graduation. Little did she know she'd spend the rest of her life with her own Fred. I don't know if I've ever photographed a detail that so perfectly captured a couple's whole dynamic — the playfulness, the history, the inside jokes that only make sense to them. Fred the flamingo absolutely deserved his moment, and he knew it.
The morning after the wedding, we were up before most sensible people would consider reasonable, which is the only correct way to visit Yellowstone National Park. Fred had a location in mind — Artist Paint Pots — and I understood immediately why it was his favorite. The landscape up there is genuinely otherworldly. Bubbling mud pools and steaming vents, and colors that don't look like they belong on this planet. It's the kind of place that makes you feel small in a good way, like the earth is reminding you it was here long before you and will be here long after. From there, we made our way to Yellowstone Falls and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone — that deep, dramatic gorge carved in brilliant yellow and orange rock with the falls thundering down into it.
On our way out of the park, the bison showed up. A whole herd, just doing what bison do, completely unbothered by our existence. We pulled over. We took photos from a very safe, very reasonable, abundantly respectful distance. I want to be very clear about this — do not approach bison. Do not try to take a selfie with a bison. They are enormous and fast and entirely uninterested in being your content. Admire them from afar, as nature intended. We did. It was perfect.
Real Review:
We cannot recommend Leah enough! From start to finish, she captured every moment of our perfect wedding day and even the day after, exploring the breathtaking Yellowstone National Park. As a couple who had never had professional photos taken, we were nervous at first, but Leah immediately made us feel comfortable and at ease. Her talent, professionalism, and genuine warmth shone through in every shot. The photos perfectly reflect the joy, love, and magic of our wedding, and we will treasure them forever. Leah truly went above and beyond, and working with her was an absolute dream!
