Witchy Romance: A Stunning Gothic Wedding at the Madonna Inn
There are venues, and then there is the Madonna Inn.
I've shot weddings in vineyards, barns, rooftop terraces, and beachside pavilions. But the moment a bride tells me she's getting married at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, I feel something shift — a little giddiness, a little creative hunger. Because this place isn't just a venue. It's a fever dream. A love letter written in bubblegum pink and gold filigree and waterfall showers carved from raw stone. And it is, without question, one of the most photogenic places I've ever had the privilege of working in.
Sam knew exactly what she was doing when she booked it.
Sam's getting-ready room was everything. Blush walls so saturated they practically glowed. A tufted headboard the color of peonies. Ornate gold fixtures catch the morning light. I set down my bag and just stood there for a second, taking it in — because as a photographer, a room like this is genuinely rare. Every corner was a portrait backdrop. Every surface had texture.
Now, I have to pause here and mention something important: Sam is a hairstylist. Not just any hairstylist — she's the kind of artist who has built an entire aesthetic identity around her craft. You might know her from Instagram as @gothhairbae, where she creates some of the most stunning, editorial hair work you'll ever see.
A lot of couples underestimate how much the environment shapes a wedding gallery. Light matters. Color matters. Texture and architecture and the mood a space carries all matter enormously. The Madonna Inn, with its unapologetically maximalist design, every room themed, every hallway dripping with personality, gives a photographer endless material to work with.
But beyond aesthetics, there's something the Inn does atmospherically. It's joyful. Guests arrive and they immediately delight in the place. That looseness, that warmth, translates directly to candid photographs. People laugh more freely. They wander the grounds and discover things. They lean into the absurdity and wonder of it all. And that's exactly what you want on a wedding day.
The ceremony location in the ‘Main Dance Floor’ is a showstopper. Soaring ceilings, red chandeliers casting everything in a warm jewel-toned glow, golden curtains, hardwood floors that seem to have absorbed decades of celebration. Rows of plush velvet pink chairs lined the aisle — soft and romantic, somehow perfectly at odds with Sam's black gown in the best possible way. That contrast again. It followed her everywhere.
And then there's the staircase.
That cascading staircase is the kind of architectural detail that makes a photographer go very still and very focused. Because you only get one shot at it. Sam appeared at the top — black gown, hair flawless (naturally), the warm glow of the chandeliers catching every edge of her — and descended into the room like she'd been doing it her whole life. The guests seated below her. The red light above her. Every eye in the room on her.
The ceremony itself had that rare quality where the room does half the emotional work for you. Guests were already a little undone by the space, a little softened by the light. By the time Sam reached the bottom of those stairs and found her person waiting for her, there wasn't a dry eye in the house — and I was doing my absolute best to keep my own composure behind the lens.
Sam's wedding cake was not trying to be subtle, and I respected it enormously. Dark, dramatic, and completely on theme, it felt like a natural extension of everything else she had put together for the day rather than an afterthought. In a venue as visually loud as the Madonna Inn, it still managed to hold its own in the room. The cake cutting was one of those moments that swings unexpectedly between tender and chaotic, which is honestly the only way it should go.
Real Review
Having Leah shoot our wedding was epic!! She really captured the mood of our wedding and took the reins, finding the most gorgeous spots around the venue for our photos. Looking back at the photos we were in awe, she captured all of the most special moments, even when we weren’t aware of her presence! She was easy going which made us feel so comfortable and she gave us some direction which was so helpful for us! Thanks again Leah!
