Gothic Arches and Golden Light: Layla & Eric Engagement Session at Cathedral Park Portland
Cathedral Park is one of those Portland locations that stops people in their tracks the first time they see it. Tucked under the St. Johns Bridge in North Portland along the Willamette River, the park takes its name from the soaring Gothic concrete arches that support the bridge above — massive, elegant, and completely unexpected in the middle of a city neighborhood. When the light is right, those arches frame everything beneath them like something out of a European cathedral, which is exactly what you want when you're photographing two people who are head over heels for each other.
Layla and Eric were naturals. They moved through the park with that easy comfort that tells you everything you need to know about a couple — the kind of people who aren't performing for the camera so much as just being themselves while I happen to be pointing one at them. The river behind them, the arches above, the late light coming in low and warm — it all came together into the kind of session that makes me remember exactly why I love this work.
What makes these photos even sweeter in retrospect is knowing what came next. The following year, I photographed Layla and Eric's wedding — a breathtaking Micronesian celebration that is still one of the most culturally rich and joyful days I've ever had the honor of documenting.
