Andrea and Deion came to Cooper Mountain Nature Park for their maternity session for baby Myla, and I will be thinking about this one for a long time. The blush tulle robe — layers and layers of ruffles catching the wind on a hilltop above the Tualatin Valley — might be the most stunning maternity look I have ever photographed. I'm not exaggerating. The dress alone could stop traffic. Combined with that sky, that golden autumn grass, that dog sitting impossibly perfectly in every single frame? I didn't want the session to end. This is what maternity photography is supposed to feel like.
Amelia & Devin | A Front Yard Wedding in Portland, Oregon
Portland kept changing the COVID restrictions week by week, and we weren't sure until the night before whether the wedding would happen at all. It did — in Amelia and Devin's front yard, officiated by her brother Austin, livestreamed to the people who couldn't be there, and cheered on by a car parade of friends who drove by honking and holding up signs. It was one of the most joyful, most human weddings I've ever photographed.

I first came into Mecona's world through her aunt's wedding — a stunning celebration at Grand Island Mansion in California that I'll never forget. When Mecona reached out for family photos at Lake Chabot with her husband Alex and their little one Journey, it felt like a natural continuation of something that started with family and stayed with family. Linh & Elliott | A Surprise Proposal at a Dog Park in Eagle, Idaho
The plan was simple: a normal dog walk, a hidden photographer, a perfect proposal. The only problem was that Linh is a little stubborn, and Elliott couldn't convince her to walk to where I was waiting. So he carried her. I am not making this up. Two dogs, one determined man, one very suspicious woman mid-air — and then one of the best proposals I've ever had the privilege of hiding in the bushes to photograph.

These two are the kind of couple who are completely comfortable being adored by a camera, and the ponderosa pines gave us a moody, beautiful backdrop to work with. This was before Vietnam. I've photographed Brianna and Cameron through a lot of chapters — the engagement, the wedding, the maternity session where Brianna stood at the base of Wahclella Falls and told me, half joking, that she'd be in Vogue one day (she was right). Now there's E, a toddler with opinions about everything and a laugh that fills the whole forest. Scouters Mountain gave us ancient trees, Mount Hood on the horizon, and one family who already knows how to show up.
Hand-Dyed Silk, Spoken Word, and the Most Spectacular Backyard on the Washington Coast
When Jill and Si told me they were having a backyard wedding, I nodded and packed my bags. What I was not told — what I could not have anticipated — was that the backyard in question sits on the coast of Washington and belongs to a family that approaches everything, including a wedding, with the kind of creativity and intention that makes you feel like you've stumbled into something rare. Jill hand-dyed her own silk skirt. There was a live band, spoken word poetry, and interpretive dance. The cocktail menu featured hand-painted portraits of their cats. The flower girl wore a sunflower crown in blue and yellow.
Gothic Arches and Golden Light: Layla & Eric Engagement Session at Cathedral Park Portland
Cathedral Park sits beneath the St. Johns Bridge in North Portland, and if you've never been, the Gothic concrete arches that line the riverbank are unlike anything else in the city — dramatic, airy, and somehow both grand and intimate all at once. It was the perfect setting for Layla and Eric, who would go on to have one of my all-time favorite weddings the following year. Spoiler: it was stunning.
Dreamy Boise Couples Boudoir Session at 26th Street Studio
Some shoots happen outside with big skies and golden hour light. And then there are the ones where you pull the curtains back in a beautiful Boise Airbnb studio, let the natural light pour in over white linen and a canopy bed, and just let two people be exactly who they are together. Stella and Nathaniel's session at 26th Street Studio was the second kind — and honestly, some of my favorite work I've ever made.

The Abernethy Center's Veiled Garden in Oregon City was the perfect backdrop for Joyce and Peter's multicultural wedding — white doves released into a canopy of Pacific Northwest forest, a Nigerian outfit change mid-reception, and the Norman Sylvester Band keeping the dance floor going all night long.

When Keisha's family gathered in a Portland hospital waiting room, they didn't know whether to cry or celebrate. They did both. Because on the other side of those OR doors, her husband Seth — her partner, her person — was giving her the most literal gift a spouse can give: a piece of himself. After I submitted this maternity portfolio from Wahclella Falls in the Columbia River Gorge, one of her photos was published by Vogue — and I FaceTimed her immediately to catch her reaction. She hiked to the base of one of my favorite waterfalls in the Pacific Northwest in a golden yellow lace gown and looked every bit the editorial model she is.
