Linh & Elliott | A Surprise Proposal at a Dog Park in Eagle, Idaho
I've photographed a lot of proposals. I've hidden behind trees, crouched behind cars, tucked myself into corners of restaurants and waited. But this one — this one gave me something new.
The plan was straightforward. Elliott had scoped out the perfect spot at a dog park in Eagle, Idaho, coordinated the timing, and arranged for me to be hidden and waiting with my camera. Linh thought they were just taking the dogs for a walk. Simple.
Except Linh didn't want to walk to where I was.
Elliott tried to steer her. She wasn't interested in going that direction. He tried again. She resisted. The man had a photographer hiding in position, a ring in his pocket, and a fiancée-to-be who was, by all accounts, perfectly happy walking a completely different route. So he did the only logical thing: he picked her up and carried her there.
I watched this unfold through my lens, genuinely trying not to laugh loud enough to blow my cover. Two dogs — Remy the golden and Warf — absolutely losing their minds below him, jumping and spinning while he walked across the park holding Linh, who I can only imagine was somewhere between confused and deeply suspicious.
He set her down. He got down on one knee. And here's a detail I will never get over: Elliott on one knee is almost the same height as Linh standing up. It is the most perfectly matched, most accidentally charming proposal composition I have ever seen.
She put her hands over her mouth. The dogs continued to riot. And then — and I love this so much — Linh looked at him and said, loud enough for me to hear across the park: "Wait, is this practice??"
It was not practice.
What followed was exactly what I hope always follows a proposal — just the two of them, wandering the park in the autumn light, a little dazed and very happy, the dogs finally settling into a trot beside them.
They would go on to have a beautiful engagement session in the pines outside Boise — see it here — and then get married in Ho Chi Minh City in one of the most meaningful, beautiful weddings I have ever photographed. See the full wedding here.
But it started here. At a dog park in Eagle, Idaho. With a man carrying the love of his life across a field because she wouldn't walk there herself, and the most unintentionally perfect proposal I've ever had the joy of witnessing.
Planning a surprise proposal? I will hide wherever you need me to. Let's talk.
