Linh & Elliott | A Forest Engagement Session Outside of Boise, Idaho
Before Ho Chi Minh City, before the tea ceremony and the riverfront and the city lights at night — there was a forest outside Boise, a golden retriever named Remy, and an afternoon that felt like the perfect beginning to everything that came after.
Linh and Elliott brought Remy to their engagement session, which was the right call. Remy is a golden retriever in the truest sense — all warmth and enthusiasm, the kind of dog whose smile reads clearly in photographs, who managed to be exactly in the center of every frame and make it better for being there. The three of them sat together at the base of a ponderosa pine, cheek to cheek to fur, and it was one of those images where you don't need to do anything except press the shutter.
The ponderosa pine forest outside Boise is a different landscape than what I typically shoot in the Pacific Northwest — drier, more open, the grasses going golden in the fall, the bark of the trees that deep cinnamon red. It has a quiet drama to it. The light filters differently. Everything feels a little more still.
Linh and Elliott moved through it easily. She was in a black dress, him in a grey blazer, and they looked like they'd been doing this forever — which is the thing about people who are genuinely in it. You don't have to manufacture anything. You just walk with them and let it happen.
They would go on to get married in Ho Chi Minh City — Linh bringing her people into the world that made her, weaving Vietnamese and Jewish traditions together into something entirely their own. You can see the full wedding here.
