Two Worlds, One Love: Joyce & Peter's Nigerian-American Wedding at the Abernethy Center
Joyce was my college roommate our senior year. She ran track. I played soccer. We shared an apartment and shared everything that comes with being young and figuring out who you are — late nights, big dreams, the kind of conversations you only have when you're twenty-something and the whole world feels wide open. So when she called me and asked me to photograph her wedding, I said yes before she finished the sentence.
Joyce and Peter got married at the Abernethy Center's Veiled Garden in Oregon City, and if you haven't seen that venue, let me paint you a picture: a white gazebo tucked into a wall of Pacific Northwest forest so lush and green it almost looks unreal, rows of chairs on a brick courtyard, the whole thing wrapped in trees and birdsong and the kind of quiet that makes you feel like you wandered into something sacred.
The ceremony was everything. Joyce's mother — dressed in a stunning beaded magenta gown and silver gele headdress, radiating the kind of elegance that only comes from a lifetime of grace — carried the cathedral train of Joyce's dress to the altar. I photographed that moment and felt my chest tighten. When Joyce and Peter exchanged vows beneath that white gazebo, the whole crowd leaned in. And then — in what might be one of my all-time favorite wedding moments I've ever captured — they released two white doves together, each cradling one in their hands before sending them up into the sky above the treeline. The whole audience gasped. Phones went up everywhere. I already had my camera up.
Then came the reception in the ballroom, and that's where things got truly spectacular. Toasts were given. Money was thrown. The dance floor was packed from the moment it opened. The Norman Sylvester Band played with the kind of energy that makes you forget you're not at a concert — Norman himself working the room, guitar in hand, fedora tipped just right. The crowd was absolutely gone for it.
And then — in the middle of the reception — Joyce and Peter disappeared. And when they came back, they walked out in full traditional Nigerian attire: matching embroidered aso-oke fabric in cream and purple, Joyce in a gorgeous gele headwrap, Peter in a matching fila cap, both of them glowing. The room erupted. People were on their feet. They danced together to Nigerian music while the whole ballroom showered them with celebration, and I stood there photographing it, thinking: this is two families, two cultures, two worlds coming together in the most joyful way I have ever seen. Joyce looked like royalty. Because she is.
