Through Sickness and Through Health: How Seth Became Keisha's Perfect Match
There are wedding vows, and then there are the moments that prove them. When Keisha and Seth exchanged promises on their wedding day, "in sickness and in health" was a phrase — beautiful, meaningful, but abstract. Then came the diagnosis. Then came the waiting. Then came the moment the doctor said the words that changed everything: Seth, you're a match.
I was asked to document Keisha's kidney transplant surgery at a Portland, Oregon hospital, and I want to be honest with you — I didn't know if I was ready for what I'd witness. I've photographed births and funerals and first dances and final goodbyes. But I had never stood inside a moment quite like this one: a husband and wife, both in hospital gowns on the same day, giving and receiving the most profound gift imaginable.
Keisha arrived with her whole heart — and her whole crew. Mom sat close, holding her hand through every needle poke, every form, every waiting minute. Friends lingered in the lobby, passing around a toddler in a pink bow who had no idea her parents were about to be heroes to each other. Their pastor prayed over them. Keisha gave the camera a double thumbs-up from beneath her surgical cap, and I thought: only she could make this moment feel like a celebration.
But there were quieter moments too — the ones I treasure most. Keisha's mother kissing her daughter's hands like she was trying to memorize them. Keisha staring at the ceiling before surgery, fingers laced together, just breathing.
I don't have the right words for what it means to be trusted with a day like this. What I can say is that Keisha and Seth didn't just survive this chapter — they shone through it.
