Pirate Punk & Peacock Feathers | A Music Festival Wedding in the Mendocino Woods

Some weddings are events. And then some are experiences — the kind where you show up not entirely sure what to expect and leave having witnessed something genuinely singular. Amy and John's wedding in the Mendocino woods was the second kind entirely.

Let me set the scene. Ancient redwoods. Ferns. A creek running through fallen logs and river stone. Two people in all black, completely in their element, surrounded by a community of musicians, artists, and friends who showed up like they were attending the best outdoor festival of the year. Because they were.

Amy was stunning — dark hair, red lips, a sleek black gown that moved through the redwood forest like it was made for exactly this setting. Her bouquet was a dark, dramatic cascade of black roses, deep purple blooms, lavender, ferns, and a single peacock feather — one of the most striking arrangements I've ever photographed, moody and wild and completely intentional. John looked like he walked straight out of a gothic folk ballad — long hair, magnificent beard, black suit with a green velvet lapel and a pink boutonniere that popped against all that dark. Together they were absolutely electric.

The forest portraits were some of my favorite images I've made in a long time. There's something about tall redwoods that creates a kind of cathedral quiet, and Amy and John moved through it like they belonged there — laughing, kissing, completely at ease in a landscape as dramatic as they are.

And then the music started.

John is the banjo-playing, trumpet-blowing member of The Deadly Gallows — a Reno-based pirate punk folk band with the kind of sound that makes you want to stomp your feet and raise a glass to something. On his wedding night, still in his suit, boutonniere intact, he got on stage and played. Because of course he did. Friends' bands took the stage too, one after another, filling the Mendocino woods with music that echoed through the trees long into the night.

It was a music festival. It was a wedding. It was a campfire and a celebration and a gathering of people who love hard and live loud and know how to throw a party in the woods that nobody forgets.

We stayed the night. We sat around the fire. The redwoods held the whole thing quietly, the way old things do.

Amy and John — you are two of a kind and this day was completely, perfectly yours. What an absolute honor to be there for it.
