She Said Yes in the Vineyard | A Fall Proposal at Windy Hills Winery, Washington
I arrived at Windy Hills Winery before they did.
That's how proposal photography works — you scope the location, find your angle, get hidden, and then wait. Windy Hills is a beautiful winery and event center in Ridgefield, Washington, and on a gray November day with the vineyard leaves turned deep russet red and the trees beyond blazing in amber and orange, it was the kind of setting that does all the emotional heavy lifting before anyone even arrives.
Nick had the whole thing planned. He knew exactly where he was going to do it: under the wooden pergola at the end of the vineyard rows, framed by the vines on either side and all that fall color behind them. I tucked myself in among the vines and waited.
When the moment came, it came fast. Nick went down on one knee and Lindsey's whole body reacted — hands up, leaning forward, completely undone by it. I don't think she breathed for a second. That's the shot. The one where you can feel exactly what's happening without needing any context at all.
She said yes. Obviously.
After that, we let them have a few minutes just to be in it together — and then we made photographs. The vines were still holding their leaves, that deep wine-red color that happens in late fall right before everything goes bare. We walked the rows, laughing, the light going soft and grey-white the way it does on an overcast November day in the Pacific Northwest. It started to rain — lightly, the kind of drizzle that looks beautiful in photographs and barely registered on anyone's face.
And then — the best kind of surprise after a surprise.
Lindsey's best friend had been waiting. She came out and Lindsey saw her and that was it — a full sprint hug, both of them laughing and crying, the kind of reaction that tells you everything you need to know about a friendship. Nick stood just to the side, beaming. The three of them together in that moment was one of my favorite things I photographed all year.
Nick and Lindsey — thank you for letting me hide in your vineyard. It was worth every second.
