Sweetgrass & Vows | A Wedding at Red Barn Villa | Oregon City, Oregon
Some couples arrive at their wedding day having thought deeply about what it means — what they want to honor, what they want to carry forward, what they want the people they love to witness. Celena and Tommy Ghost Dog are those people.
Tommy is from the Oglala Lakota and Paiute tribes. Celena is Diné — Navajo. Their wedding wasn't just a celebration of two people finding each other. It was a layering of cultures, of histories, of identity — two people bringing their whole selves to one of the most significant days of their lives. Being trusted to photograph that felt like a responsibility I took seriously.
The details throughout the day reflected who they are with quiet intention. Celena’s bridal party carried bouquets of braided sweetgrass — fragrant, sacred, and deeply rooted in Indigenous tradition. It was one of the most meaningful bouquet details I have ever photographed. The kind of thing you notice immediately and don't forget.
They chose to begin the day in the forest.
Before any guests arrived, before the public ceremony, Celena and Tommy slipped away into the trees for a private vow exchange — just the two of them, the woods around them, saying the words that mattered most without an audience. There is something about that kind of intentionality that I find deeply moving. The private moment before the shared one. The most important words are spoken quietly, held between just two people before they step into the rest of the day.
Red Barn Villa in Oregon City is a beautifully kept outdoor venue that gave the day room to breathe. Lush gardens, a forest, a patio, rolling hills in the background — multiple distinct spaces that allowed the day to unfold in layers, each one feeling different from the last. The garden ceremony for friends and family was warm and full, a room — or rather, a garden — of people gathered to witness something real. After those private vows in the trees, the public ceremony carried its own meaning. Everyone there knew they were seeing something that mattered.
The reception moved to the patio as the evening settled in — dinner catered by Poblano Pepper PDX, which was an absolutely perfect choice, the food as warm and soulful as the day itself. Dining gave way to dancing, and dancing gave way to one of those receptions that nobody wants to end.
Celena and Tommy — thank you for letting me into something so layered and so meaningful. Your day was beautiful in every sense of the word.
