Dark & Ethereal Oregon Coast Portraits | Pacific Northwest Photographer

Cannon Beach on an overcast evening is one of the most naturally dramatic locations I have ever pointed a camera at. Haystack Rock sitting in the fog. Sea stacks disappearing into the mist. Cold Pacific water moving in across flat dark sand. It does not need any help being cinematic — it just is.

We came to Cannon Beach with two gowns and a loose plan, and the Oregon Coast gave us everything we asked for and then some. The black lace dress went first — sheer over red velvet florals, long lace-cuffed sleeves, the kind of dress that looks like it belongs to someone the sea already knows. She walked into the water without hesitation. Between two massive sea stacks with Haystack Rock ghosted out in the fog behind her, the fabric spreading across the shallows, one arm reaching skyward — I was shooting as fast as I could and still felt like I was barely keeping up.

The Oregon Coast sea stacks are extraordinary to shoot in. Jagged and enormous and covered in moss, they frame a subject in a way that feels ancient. We used every inch of them — Jessica wading through the shallows between rock formations, the fog rolling in behind her, the grey Pacific stretching out to nothing. Dark and completely alive in every frame.

Then the sky over Cannon Beach cracked open and went gold.

We made the switch to the burgundy lace gown right at that turn — floor length, lace-edged, deep wine red — and it was an entirely different session. The same beach that had felt gothic and moody twenty minutes earlier went warm and cinematic in the sunset light. The lace caught the gold. The skirt lifted in the wind off the water. Jessica raised the fabric overhead, and the whole thing billowed against the foggy Cannon Beach sky, and it was one of the most beautiful frames I have taken on the Oregon Coast.

She went back into the waves fully. The burgundy gown soaking, Haystack Rock enormous in the background, head tilted back in the surf. I kept shooting until the light was completely gone.

Cannon Beach, the Oregon Coast, a gothic gown, and a subject who commits completely — I will say yes to that combination every single time.
