JP | Senior Photos at Lacamas Lake and the Liberty Theater, Camas, Washington
I met JP when he was a baby. I was a kid myself, holding him on the soccer sidelines while his dad coached my team. That's where this whole story starts — muddy cleats, a little kid in someone's arms, a family that would stay in my life for years longer than any of us probably expected.
I photographed his mom Niki's wedding day, where a teenage JP stood up and officiated the whole ceremony — which you can read about here — and it was one of the most unexpectedly moving things I've witnessed at a wedding. I've done updated family photos for Niki and JP in the years since, watching him get taller and older and more himself with every session.
And now: senior portraits. The baby on the sidelines is graduating.
We spent the session between two of my favorite spots in Clark County — Lacamas Lake Regional Park and downtown Camas. Lacamas is one of those places that just gives you everything: still water reflecting the treeline, rocky shores, warm fall light filtering through the pines. JP was easy in front of the camera in the way that confident, self-possessed people tend to be — not because he was performing, but because he just is who he is. The curly hair, the easy smile, the yellow sneakers. Very much his own person.
Then we headed downtown to the Liberty Theater as the evening light came on and the marquee lit up, and that's where the session really found its second gear. The warm glow of all those bulbs behind him, the neon LIBERTY sign overhead, JP in a blazer with his arms crossed looking like someone who has somewhere important to be — it was just perfect. A classic Pacific Northwest kid in a classic Pacific Northwest small-town setting, and the photographs know it.
