Making It Official | A Wedding at Grand Island Mansion | Walnut Grove, California
Some love stories don't need a grand introduction. They just need the right moment to make it official.
Jessy and Anna have been together for years — building a life, showing up for each other, doing the quiet, unglamorous, deeply beautiful work of loving someone for a long time. They are my friends' aunties, which means I came into this wedding already knowing something about who they are and what they mean to the people around them. And watching an entire room full of people who have loved these two women — separately and together — finally get to celebrate them officially was something I felt all the way through.
They chose the right place for it.
The Grand Island Mansion in Walnut Grove, California is the kind of venue that makes you catch your breath a little when you first arrive. A historic landmark sitting right in the heart of the Sacramento River delta region, it is grand in every sense of the word — lush gardens, cascading fountains, manicured grounds that seem to go on forever, and an elegance that feels earned rather than performed. The florals were extraordinary. Every corner I turned was another frame worth stopping for. As a photographer it's the kind of place that gives you almost too much to work with, which is a very good problem to have.
The California light did what California light does — warm and generous and flattering to everything it touched. The gardens and fountains provided a backdrop that felt almost cinematic, and Jessy and Anna moved through it all with the ease of two people who are completely comfortable in their own skin and with each other. That kind of settled, joyful confidence photographs beautifully. It always does.
And then the dancing started.
The dance floor that night was one of the most joyful I've ever had the pleasure of photographing. Friends who had flown in, family who had waited years for exactly this celebration, everyone completely given over to the moment. There's something about a queer wedding where the room knows the weight of what it means to finally, publicly, officially celebrate a love like this — and Jessy and Anna's people felt every bit of it. The energy was electric and warm and completely full of love.
Jessy and Anna — it was such an honor to be there for your day. You two have been showing everyone around you what love looks like for years. It was about time the party caught up.
