Tucked Into the Green — Samantha's Family Session on Private Property in Portland, Oregon

If you've ever wondered why so many photographers love shooting in the Pacific Northwest, this session is your answer. Private property tucked into the trees just outside Portland, Oregon, dense dark evergreens, that signature moody green-on-green backdrop, soft diffused light that flatters everyone it touches. It's the kind of setting you don't have to style or plan around. You just show up and let it do its thing.

Samantha's family showed up in perfect form. The color palette was exactly right for this kind of light: burgundy corduroy on the toddler, a red and navy plaid flannel on dad, warm neutrals on mom. Everything felt intentional without being overly matched, which is exactly the balance that photographs so well.

The toddler, and I say this with full sincerity, was a natural. She had this grin she'd flash right at the camera like she knew exactly what she was doing, followed immediately by turning to dad with that same look, daring him to keep up. He did. The two of them held each other's gaze and just laughed, and it was the kind of moment that doesn't need any prompting. The baby, tucked in on mom's side, observed all of this with the quiet, wide-eyed calm of someone who has correctly assessed that his sister handles the energy for the whole family.

The blanket-on-the-grass moments were my favorite; everyone just settled in together, the kids in laps, nobody trying too hard. Those are the shots that age the best. Twenty years from now, this is what they'll want to remember: the four of them, in the green, laughing at something small.

Samantha, thank you for bringing me into your world for an afternoon. Your family is just wonderful.
